San Diego Wine Tasting Doesn’t Get Any Better Than This

Think that Napa was the first place to produce wines in California? Think again! San Diego County is actually where wineries and viticulture (the science, production, and study of grapes) began in the Golden State!

“The Father of California Wine” was Father Junipero Serra, a Franciscan friar who founded San Diego’s famous Mission San Diego de Alcala. He planted the first vineyards at the mission around 1778… the same year that the American Revolutionary War began!

You might say that San Diego is the “OG” of Wine Production and Wine Tasting in California.

Father Serra started a movement that is still in full swing today… currently, there are more than 115 wineries in San Diego County and the local industry is vibrant and growing!

In fact, there has never been a better time to enjoy wine tasting in San Diego. One of San Diego’s favorite wineries, Speckle Rock Vineyards, won DOUBLE GOLD at the 2019 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, the largest wine competition in North America. They join numerous other San Diego vintners who are making a name for themselves by producing award-winning wines that receive rave reviews. On each of our winery tours, you will get to experience unparalleled wine tasting that will delight your palate.

On the San Diego Chauffeured Winery Tour,  We Visit Three Wineries Near San Diego

On the San Diego Chauffeured Winery tour, our knowledgeable tour guide will pick you and whisk you away to three vineyard wineries near San Diego (in fact, all nice and close in San Diego county) to taste some of San Diego’s best wines. We carefully choose the wineries we visit on each tour, so as to provide our guests with the most well-rounded, tasty adventure possible. On your tour, you will enjoy wine tasting in San Diego at three of our top picks. Your tour may include

  • The sparkling wine at San Diego County’s oldest winery, which is also the oldest continuously operating winery in Southern California. “Sparkling wine” is a very close cousin to French champagne, but since it’s not produced in the Champagne region in France, we call it “sparkling wine” in California.
  • A delicious Cab Franc at a family-run winery where in the tasting room, you’ll likely meet the couple who runs the vineyard and makes the wine. It’s an incredible experience to meet the artisan winemakers who have put their heart and soul into the glass you are savoring!
  • Beautiful “vino rossos” from a winemaker who hails from Southern Italy. His vineyard is nestled in the hills of Highland Valley of North County San Diego, and has sweeping views of the valley below. (This spot is a guest-favorite for memorabilia photos that will last a lifetime.)
  • An unforgettable estate Merlot at a 70 acre winery with breathtaking views. At this vineyard, you can relax on the patio and enjoy the California sunshine as you enjoy your tasting. The quality of the wines and views at this vineyard rival anything you’d see in France or Italy.
  • …and so many more!
We Haven’t Forgotten the Food!

What is a wine tasting adventure without the perfect food pairings to fuel the experience? On this tour, we serve you a lavish fruit and cheese platter or meat and cheese platter that pairs perfectly with the wine that you are tasting; you’ll savor tastings of small batch olive oil, vinegars and spreads. (After this tasting, you’ll never want “store bought” again!); and you’ll enjoy an early winery dinner made with love at one special winery that we personally visit time-and-again.

Oh…and chocolate! At one memorable stop, your tour guide will prepare a wine and chocolate pairing that you won’t soon forget.

Angela, a recent guest, wrote “Took the VIP chauffeured day trip through three wineries with my mother on our vacation. Was such an amazing day! Our guide, Tiffany, was so entertaining, thoughtful, and always kept us informed. Each winery offered a different experience and the dinner at the end was an amazing location! There were an abundance of tastings included and our group had a fun time together, even though we started the day as strangers. Highly recommend this experience! Well worth the cost!”

Another guest, Kathy, wrote: “We treated ourselves to the wine tour! We were picked up at the hotel by a pleasant gentleman named Paris. Along the way to the wineries he pointed out places of interest and the history.  He discussed each winery and gave some recommendations on the wines. We had ample time to sample 5 wines at each winery. He brought a cheese/meat tray for the first winery which had excellent cheeses and olives (I don’t eat meat). The last winery provided a light but delicious meal-vegetarian friendly. I thought the wines were excellent!! Had a Zinfandel I would love to have shipped back to Indiana. It was a wonderful full afternoon shared with a great friend with someone else (Paris) doing the driving.”

Paige wrote, “This tour is a must do for wine lovers when in San Diego. We visited three wineries and enjoyed 18 tastings, cheese, chocolate and lunch. Excellent communication from start to finish, with Paris first confirming our time by email as promised, then notifying us of a brief delay, and then arriving promptly after that. Paris extended the tour to make up for the delay. A winemaker himself, he was knowledgeable and accommodating, respectful and attentive. He shared his knowledge and love for wine, making it a really enjoyable day. We would not hesitate to rebook with Paris and highly recommend him and San Diego Beer, Wine & Spirits tour company.”

Great food and great people. Diana was our guide and she was so friendly and super knowledgeable! Thanks again San Diego Beer, Wine & Spirits.”

Jim left us this review on our Google Business page, “We booked our wine tour while visiting from Kansas City for January 1st. I was impressed right from the start. My conversations with the office during booking and the follow up and all communications were clear and precise.

We were told our driver, Rob, would text us to confirm our pick up time at our place we were staying before 9:30 the day of the tour. He was actually a little early in contacting us which was good. He determined our schedule time of pick up was close to noon. He was right on time. We joined four others on this tour which was great for conversation and good times.

Rob entertained us during the drive to and from the wineries with points of interest and history and a bit of comical intervention. Rob has a calming voice and instantly puts us at ease as he drives us through the busy traffic of San Diego County.

When we arrived at the wineries, Rob gave us clear instructions on what to expect during each tour. We also we given time to be on our own to explore each site. We had appetizers at the first stop and dinner at the last stop. Everything was superb, including the weather.

We had a great time and I recommend this to anyone, even if they are not big wine drinkers, which I am not. Thanks to Rob for making this a very enjoyable experience.

Brenda gushed on our Facebook page “Yesterday, I had the pleasure of taking the chauffeured winery tour with Paris being our guide. He was an exceptional expert on wine and presented us with a wonderful meat & cheese spread at the 1st winery, a great tour at the 2nd winery, and a delicious BBQ meal at the last stop. I took the tour alone but had incredible company with Barb & Don from Canada and 3 young adults from Norway. It was one of the best experiences of my life! I can’t wait to come back and do it again!”

Another guest, Jeffrey wrote, “This was a great tour! Diana was our tour guide. Our group happened to be three couples from all around the U.S., so it was fun to make friends. Diana was very knowledgeable about the San Diego area, the history of wine making in California and in the area, all the local vineyards and wineries, and of course wine in general! She made it fun and educational. All the stops were awesome and different. I would highly recommend this trip with San Diego Beer, Wine & Spirits Tours!”

Danielle shared, “This was hands down the most amazing wine tour we have all been on, thanks to the fabulous Paul Anthony. Meticulous attention to detail, wonderful vineyards with unique and charming atmospheres, generous pours, and a well-executed agenda. Paul Anthony put together an afternoon that got better and better with each hour. We planned this outing for a bachelorette weekend and must say that this was a party the bride to be will always remember. Thank you PA for showing us the beautiful San Diego wine country!”

Brittney wrote, “Had such a fantastic time on our chauffeured wine trip! Tiffany was our guide and communicated clearly on pick up time, we had the whole van to our own group (lucky us!) and totally exceeded our expectations. Would do this again in a heartbeat.”
